The School of Forestry and
Environment is established with multidisciplinary approach comprising
biological principles, quantitative approaches through which technologies
and practices are developed to manage forest and natural resources. The
primary focus of School of Forestry & Environment is on Teaching, Research
and Extension reflecting the social, economical and ethical values of
community in the era. The students at undergraduate level are taught about
Agroforestry, Silviculture, Forest Biology, Tree Improvement, Forest
Products & Utilization, Environmental Science, Soil Science, Wildlife
Management, Basic Sciences & Humanities. Besides specialized programs are
being run on Agroforestry, Agrometeorology, Forestry, Environmental Science,
Wildlife Science, Forestry & Environment Management and Soil Science. The
mission of the faculty is to develop technically qualified forestry
professionals with sufficient skills to manage, conserve and develop
diversified forest resources and products leading to environment and
livelihood security. It gives emphasis to meet challenges facing the poorer
and other weaker section of the society for raising their socio-economic
condition through various activities in the field of Forestry. Inaugurated
as a small Department of Agroforestry, the School of Forestry and
Environment currently has six departments with each catering to the needs of
several post graduate and under graduate students. In recognition of the
impact of advanced technologies on society, the School imparts
socio-economic awareness and promotes the use of these technologies for
complex problems. The educational programs are based on contemporary theory
and practice and to provide a conceptual formulation to those aspiring to
top-level positions and career opportunities.
Laboratory Facilities
The school has excellent laboratory facilities for conducting practical
classes and advanced researches for students. School has state-of-the-art
forestry laboratory for conducting practical of forest genetics, stump
analysis, tree seed technology, wood analysis, forest products, tree
physiology and forest entomology etc. School has an environmental science
laboratory with all sophisticated equipments for conducting practical and
advanced research works. It also has a Soil science laboratory for catering
the needs of UG and PG students regarding soil testing, water analysis and
plant analysis.
Research Activities
The major thrust areas in Forestry includes research and development in
traditional agroforestry system, standardization of bamboo propagation
techniques, wasteland development through agroforestry models, Tree
improvement, standardization Jatropha curcus propagation and cultivation,
collection of superior germplasm for varietal orchard, medicinal, aromatic
plants cultivation and conservation, development nursery techniques for tree
species like teak, poplar, arjun, mahua, shisham, eucalyptus, subabul etc.
Department of Environmental Science was created with a vision to encourage
research on drinking water quality analysis, heavy metal analysis, heavy
metal removal through organic materials, heavy metals assessment viz. Lead (Pb),
Cadmium (Cd), Nickel (Ni) in sewage water, effect of sewage discharge on
soil quality, and yield parameter of agricultural crops, ambient air quality
monitoring study and noise level monitoring in urban areas. Department of
Soil Science focuses its research on soil fertility, nutrient studies,
Integrated Nutrient Management on agricultural crops (rice, wheat, maize,
baby corn, barley, black gram, green gram, potato, pea oil seed crops) and
fruit crops. The major thrust areas in Agrometeorology is to provide real
time weather information to the farmers and research scholar, monitoring and
predication weather hazards, contingency planning, monitoring on climate
change and its effect on agriculture and forestry.
Wildlife education and research emphasizes on threats to our wildlife
biodiversity due to habitat loss, poaching, poisoning, accidents, diseases
and disorders culminating into effective wildlife conservation and
management strategies
